Happiness, Contentment

“Be Content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to
you.” – Lao Tzu

From 8 in the morning until 5 at at night, Monday through Friday, I coach professionals on how to reach their goals and achieve more in their lives.

About 4 years ago, I came across this quote and recognized that I needed to balance this push for achievement with an appreciation for present.

This balance is difficult because the world has convinced us that the only path to happiness is through achievement and acquisition.

This week, practice being grateful for all you have been given.

How to Get out of a Funk

The other week, I was in a funk; A deep funk.  Have you ever been there?  The times when you feel like you can’t get out of bed, can’t do anything right, and there is a dark animated cloud raining on you wherever you walk?

Everyone at some time or another feels like that, even if it’s only for a brief moment; especially when you are in the high pressure position of being a business owner.

Our challenge as leaders in the business community is to get out of a funk as fast as possible, so we can get back to the task of leading people towards a shared vision.

Here are 8 tips to getting out a funk quickly and unscathed:
1.    Exercise – Moving your body creates energy and raises your endorphin levels, which are thought to be connected to euphoric feelings.  If you want an immediate boost to your attitude, just start moving!

2.    Eat Well – If I want to fall asleep, I don’t take Unisom or Tylenol PM, I eat McDonalds!  Foods that are high in fat and sugar affect our brain function, energy levels, and our ability to focus.  If you want to get out a funk, eat nutrient and water rich foods like vegetables and fruits, and drink a ton of water.

3.    Avoid Alcohol – Following a tough day, I’ve been known to say, “I need a stiff drink!”  That’s exactly the opposite of what I need.  What I need to feel refreshed is good nutrient rich food, meditation and journaling, and a bit of exercise.  Alcohol robs your body of water and zaps your cells of energy.  It is also a depressant – which makes you feel exactly the opposite of what you want to create when you’re in a funk.

4.    Get Rest – Not getting out of bed when you don’t feel like it is not helpful to getting out of a funk, but consistently getting 6-8 hours of sleep is.  Treat your body to a couple of nights of good rest, and just watch your mood improve.

As usual, I am a tease.  I will give you the other 4 tips in my next blog.  See you next week!

Enjoy the Ride

On my way to Gatlinburg, TN in April, I ran into some problems about 6 hours into my trip, and ran into the most massive traffic jam I have seen in 2010!

After working a full and tough week, I hopped into my car and drove all the way to TN for a quick getaway vacation.  Apparently in Pigeon Forge there was a car show that night.  I went from being excited about getting to my vacation destination early; to grumbling because it took me two hours to drive 12-miles through this car show.

In the middle of fuming about how tired I was, I paused and looked at the scenery around me.  There were people walking up and down the street in their summer clothes, laughing and enjoying one another.  There were rows and rows and rows of beautiful old and new cars.  Their owners were standing close by with looks of pride on their faces, and a polishing cloth in their hands.

Everyone with a convertible had their tops down, there were tons of people in the backs of jacked-up lifted pick-up trucks, and tweaked mufflers sang the song of their over-eager owners pumping the gas pedal.

This was a party.  I was in the middle of a party!  So, instead of being mad about my situation, I decided to join the party!  I put my top down, turned up my music, and participated in every bit of the car show.

I enjoyed the ride.  Life and business are a ride, and we have to enjoy every moment of them.

There is a quote that says, “Success is a journey, not a destination.”  Remember that saying as you go through your great days and your poor days.  Success is equivalent to what you are doing right now, so put your top down and enjoy it!
