What are your Paper Tigers?
“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure , the process is its own reward.” – Amelia Earhart

Most people over think the tough decisions always putting off the yes/no because they need more information.

What their really doing is waiting until absolutely all risk has been eliminated.

That day will never come.

What decision do you need to make?

Setting Goals & Completing Them
“The more intensely we feel about an idea or a goal, the more assuredly the idea, buried deep in our subconscious, will direct us along the path to its fulfillment.” - Earl Nightingdale

This famous quote illustrates an eternal truth - you will achieve whatever you focus on most of the time.

I have spent the last 8 years teaching individuals how to focus on their goals and have witnessed some amazing breakthroughs.

However, for every breakthrough, someone tells me that they lost focus after hearing me speak.  Frustrated, this led me to ask:

“Is there a way to help someone set breakthrough goals and stay focused through to their completion?”

8 years, hundreds of clients and dozens of workshops later I am excited to announce that the answer is YES!

What are you becoming?
“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to
give something back by becoming more” – Tony Robbins

For some reason, this past week I have had the “What’s the purpose of life?” discussion with many of my clients.

The answer is… I’m not sure.

However, I do know one thing.  We can’t stay the same.  You’re either getting better or getting worse at everything in your life.  Your relationships, your job and your health.

What are you becoming?

Price

What’s the difference between a Rolex and a Timex?

You wear them both on your wrist, they both tell time and will each break down every know and then.

However, one costs $99 and the other $5,000.

Which would you rather sell?  In other words, which one would generate the most profit?

Now think about how this simple example applies to your business.

Does the marketplace perceive you to be a Rolex or a Timex?  Why?

What do you need to do to change that perception?

And by the way…  if you are under the impression that you will always be a Timex, do something different.  Being a commodity in a world with information at out fingertips is no fun.

Blind Spot

Have you ever changed lanes in traffic and been startled by a loud horn from someone that you just cutoff?

Unless you ride the bus to work, this has probably happened to you on multiple occasions.

The problem we all have as drivers is that there is a small area that you can’t see in your rear view mirror called your “blind spot”.

What most people don’t realize is that they also have blind spots in their personal and professional lives.

These are areas where we have (and often have had for a long time) deficiencies we don’t realize.

For example, in my first few years in business I would attend many networking events.  Rarely did I meet anyone interesting and often left the event wondering why I had wasted my time.

One evening a good friend and client of mine (Larry) walked up to me and said, “Why don’t you just go home?”  When I asked why he suggested I leave, Larry told me that, “Everyone can tell you don’t want to be here.  You stand in a corner with this awful look on your face like you are better than everyone else.  Do you think people want to talk to someone like that?”

Initially, my feelings were hurt.  However, now I was aware that the reason I wasn’t getting good results from networking was because I was a jerk.

I changed my behavior and built my business attending these events.

Where’s your blind spot?

The Power of a Metaphor

I recently completed the book “Switch” by the Heath brothers (Chip and Dan). The writing and concepts are good – not great.

However, this book has a quality that makes it a must read.  Chip and Dan do an amazing  job of  weaving their entire book around a metaphor that I am absolutely certain will help you change your behavior.

They argue that in everyone of us there is a “rider” and an “elephant”.  The rider is our logical brain that helps us to reason through issues and challenges.  The elephant is our emotions.  Their extremely simple and brilliant point is that logic is interesting but emotion wins every time.

For example, they tell a story in the book about a hospital having to make some fundamental procedural changes that would reduce the instances where patients are given the wrong medications. The logic was clear and simple to implement.  However the hospital knew that getting busy doctors and nurses to change behaviors was difficult.

So, they focused on the elephant (emotions).  They asked a mother to speak to the hospital about losing her young daughter because she was given the wrong medication.  Guess what happened?  That’s right – they changed their behavior.

The next time you want to change the behavior of yourself or someone else, look past the logic and consider the emotional impact of the change.  Remember, the elephant is going to go wherever it wants!

How do I Stay on Top?

If you want to stay on top – embrace change.

LinkedIN just sent me an email highlighting all of my connections who changed jobs in 2010.  Facebook regularly catalogues the people who have changed their profile picture or status, and my RSS feed only gets updated when my subscriptions change their content.

Here is the common denominator – change.  The only way to stay on top in online media (AND in business) is to change.

Take a look at how you are getting new prospects, examine how you sell each new opportunity, and evaluate the experience that clients get when using your product.

If something could provide a better experience or make you more money, change it.

Speak Up for Change!

“That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves.” – Henry David Thoreau

Our country faces some big decisions in the coming weeks regarding the size and scope of our government.

My challenge to everyone is to get educated on the issues and voice your opinion – whatever it may be.

The challenge ahead is far too important to sit on the sidelines and just observe.

Environment

We started a new group coaching class this week and one of the participants made an interesting observation.  In a nutshell, he indicated that he needed to be around people that made him better. In other words, he needed to change his environment.

Author Jim Rohn states that each of us is an “average of the 5 people we spend the most time with”.

Think about that for a second.

Who do you spend your time with?

Are they positive or negative? Do they lift you up or tear you down? Do they see opportunities in every difficult situation?

Ultimately, do they make you a better person?

Maybe it’s time you considered changing your environment?

Is 2011 Going to Be Different?

After 7 years of coaching hundreds of business owners and professionals, I have heard my fair share of nonsense.

Here’s one of my favorites…. “Next year is going to be different! Next year is going to the year where I change my habits, lose weight, make more sales calls, plan my week in advance, blah, blah, blah….”

And then it happens, January 1st hits and most people jump right back into the same behavior that got them their current results.

Asked why they didn’t change, I almost always here “I’m too busy…”

Aren’t you tired of making the same excuses? Isn’t it time to change?

How is 2011 going to be different for you?
