What Does Happiness Mean to the Bottom Line?

I just completed “Delivering Happiness” by Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos.

The book was average (If you want a good summary go and Google the Zappos core values, you don’t need to read it). However, I do believe that Tony is truly a revolutionary CEO and can teach us all a lesson.

In an age where your competitive advantage can disappear overnight (think MySpace), we all need to focus on something that can separate us from everyone else.

That something is people.

Tony clearly demonstrates that by focusing on creating an amazing environment that is filled with passionate people you can achieve just about anything.

It doesn’t matter what you sell (he chose shoes), the key to building a great business has everything to do with how well you treat your people.

I couldn’t agree more.

In a hyper-competitive environment our prospects are trying to commoditize our products/services every day. We have to get different.

I would first look at your people.  What if they were truly passionate about your company?  Would your customers see the difference? Would your prospects?

Lead By Example

This past weekend I completed the Lake Lemon Triathlon just north of Bloomington, IN.

My triathlon strategy is simple – survive the swim with a little bit left in the tank so that I can coast on the bike, regain my strength, and finish the run strong.

I’m not exactly a champion.

I compete in these events for a handful of reasons – stay in shape, get a t-shirt, have fun, etc.

This year I added a new motivation for my participation.

This year my kids came to see me compete for the first time.

It’s very important that Ian and Corinne witness me setting a goal, working hard and achieving the goal (although my son Ian was a little upset that so many people finished ahead of me).

I can talk until I am blue in the face about the importance of perseverance and hard work.  But, nothing compares to leading by example.

The same is true in the workplace.  We’ve all had the boss who gives great advice and guidance but rarely practices what they preach.

Often the most effective leaders say very little.  They let their actions do the talking.

How about you?

What are you passionate about?

It’s a question I have asked hundreds of people over the years.

It’s rare that anyone has given the concept of “passion” much thought.

We are so consumed in the day to day circumstances of our lives that we don’t think it’s a good use of our time to focus on anything that isn’t on our “to-do” list.

We get bogged down in activities that don’t really interest us, but that we feel must be completed.

I often ask myself – “What am I passionate about?”

I have some really fancy answers.  However, do my calendar and checkbook reflect my passion?  In other words, do I spend my money and my time on the things that I am passionate about or am I all talk?

I am not 100% comfortable with the answer.

However, I am committed to change this situation.

On that note, I am excited to announce the first event for the Reach Foundation™  Mark your calendars for August 16th from 3-5 pm.

We will be supporting one of central Indiana’s most amazing non-profit organizations.

It’s time for me to focus on what’s really important.  How about you?
